It's a look he wore often on camera. In the 1960s, having acquired a certain amount of star power through his role in ATV's "Danger Man" (aka "Secret Agent" as it was known in the USA), McGoohan persuaded Lew Grade to allow him to make "The Prisoner", which he not only starred in, but he also wrote and directed various episodes (sometimes under a pseudonym). "The Prisoner" was innovative, perplexing, sometimes inconsistent in quality- but forty years later is still a thing of exquisite beauty.
